I can only hope that EA and PopCap rectify it soon. A quick glance at the EA forums suggests that this is a recurring problem among some players. This would not happen during all of my matches, but it was very irritating whenever it did occur. I would also need to shoot my target much more aggressively, as many of my shots would not register a hit despite the targeting reticle indicating that my aim was dead on. While the frame rate would remain consistent, my character would seem to lurch every few steps, which made movement very jerky. Pushing Up Daisies I noticed some irritating stuttering during some of my online matches, which detracted from the overall experience. This card-collecting system, alongside the single-player and online modes, adds great longevity to the game.
Rare card packs guarantee rare and unique character cards, but can cost up to 70,000 coins, which takes several matches to accumulate. Basic cards cost a few thousand coins, which you earn easily in a single match. This currency can be spent on card packs at an in-game vending machine, which gives you new class alts and customization options for your characters. You earn coins whenever you complete a Backyard mission or online game mode. This is a shame, because modes like Gnome Bomb, in which both teams compete for control of three destructive bombs they can use to take a base, were very fun in the original game. Other modes, such as Vanquish Confirm, Gnome Bomb, and Turf Takeover, present their own unique rules, but I found it very difficult to find matches consistently. Garden and Graveyard Ops are also well populated, in which you defend your base against waves of zombies or plants with up to three other players. Suburbination is a capture-the-flag style game mode that's also very popular online. Team Vanquish, which is the Garden Warfare version of team deathmatch, is by far the easiest game mode for finding competition. Garden Warfare 2 offers over a half dozen dedicated multiplayer modes, should you choose to test your mettle against others online. It's important to note that even if you play solo, you still need to be connected online to play. I found the AI surprisingly capable, making this mode perfectly suited to solo play, and you can swap control to an AI ally at the touch of a button. All multiplayer modes can be played solo with AI partners and opponents, a nice feature if you want to practice before playing against others online. Once you've found a character you like, you can explore the Backyard in single-player, play solo matches, or dive into multiplayer matches. The generous selection of characters keeps the game feeling fresh for a very long time, as you always have a new character to unlock and play. You can switch between the plant and zombie factions by interacting with a kiosk at your home base.
NPCs, also strewn across the backyard, offer a variety of missions to undertake. AI plants and zombies spawn and fight for control of the map's centermost park, with the plant base and zombie base situated on either side. After a quick tutorial, you find yourself in the Backyard-the game's hub world.
